AugMut is an actuated trombone mute, allowing to ‘blend’ acoustic and electronic sound, using a loudspeaker and microphone setup, where both sound sources radiate from a close-by point — the trombone’s bell. Providing an identical sound source between acoustic and electronic sounds, this project provides the means to alter, augment, modify and interact with the trombone’s acoustic sound. By utilising digital sound processing techniques, using Ableton Live and MaxMSP, the feedback path between the loudspeaker and the microphone is explored through the instrument’s resonant body, where the digital sound processing is controlled via MIDI messages (sent by HTB1 controller), enabling the performer to control sound processing parameters within the instrument, without the need for external MIDI controllers.
